Common Changes in Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy: What Is Normal?

Pregnancy changes a lot. Your appetite may shift. Your sleep may become unpredictable. Even vaginal discharge can suddenly look or feel different.

That can be alarming.

But here's the thing: increased vaginal discharge during pregnancy is often completely normal. In fact, many women notice more discharge from the first trimester itself, and it may continue throughout pregnancy.

So, what should you expect? And when does discharge suggest that something needs medical attention?

Why Does Vaginal Discharge Increase During Pregnancy?

The main reason is hormonal change.

During pregnancy, your body produces more oestrogen and experiences increased blood flow to the pelvic area. These changes stimulate the vaginal glands and can lead to greater production of discharge, commonly called leukorrhoea.

Normal pregnancy discharge is usually thin or slightly milky. It may appear clear, white, or off-white and generally has little to no unpleasant smell. You might notice it more after physical activity or simply as the pregnancy progresses.

Annoying? Sometimes.

Abnormal? Not necessarily.

Think of it as your body's natural housekeeping system.

What Does Normal Pregnancy Discharge Look Like?

Every woman's discharge isn't going to look identical, and there can be small changes from week to week.

Generally, normal discharge during pregnancy may be:

  • Clear, white, or milky in colour
  • Thin or slightly slippery in consistency
  • Mild-smelling or almost odourless
  • More noticeable than before pregnancy
  • Free from significant itching, burning, or irritation

You may need to change your underwear more frequently because of it. That's usually nothing to panic about.

Using breathable cotton underwear and keeping the area clean and dry can help you stay comfortable. Avoid scented intimate washes, vaginal deodorants, or harsh soaps, because these can irritate sensitive vaginal tissues and disturb the natural vaginal environment.

When Should You Be Concerned?

This is where paying attention matters.

Discharge that becomes yellow, green, grey, or unusually thick may sometimes indicate an infection, particularly if it comes with itching, burning, redness, pain, or a strong unpleasant odour.

A thick, cottage-cheese-like discharge accompanied by intense itching can occur with a yeast infection. A fishy smell with a thin greyish discharge may be associated with bacterial vaginosis.

Don't self-diagnose, though. Pregnancy isn't the time for experimenting with leftover medicines or random home remedies.

A gynaecologist can assess the symptoms and recommend pregnancy-safe treatment if necessary.

What About Watery Discharge?

A sudden gush or continuous leaking of watery fluid is different.

Near the later stages of pregnancy, increased discharge can sometimes be confused with leaking amniotic fluid. If you experience persistent watery leakage, especially if it is sudden, continuous, or accompanied by contractions, pelvic pressure, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement, contact your maternity care provider promptly.

It deserves attention.

When Should You See a Gynaecologist?

Don't ignore a noticeable change simply because discharge is common during pregnancy. Your symptoms, pregnancy stage, medical history, and examination findings all matter.

If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing is normal, speaking with an experienced doctor can provide much-needed clarity.
